Overview of Dubai
Dubai is home to 3.331 million people, which makes up over a third of the population of the UAE. The nodes of Dubai such as commuters bring the daytime population to well over 4 million. There is a large gender gap in the population. Males outnumber females 2:1. Dubai is not the capital of the UAE, but it is the most influential city in the country. It is known all around the world for containing the tallest building in the world--the Burj Khalifa--standing at 2,722 feet at the tip.
History of DubaiThe city of Dubai began in 1883 when it was founded by 800 tribe members who had overthrown another tribe in the area. It remained a small fishing town until the extraction of oil began generating large revenues for the city. In the mid-1900s, Dubai began to develop very rapidly due to its booming economy. Infrastructure, impressive skyscrapers, and luxurious services were not developed in Dubai until after the 1990s. As Dubai's recognition was reaching an all-time high, they built a staple of the city in the form of a skyscraper that dwarfed the rest: the Burj Khalifa.
